A protection spell, in the tradition I come from, is not a single act. It is three things done in order: finding what is there, clearing it, and closing the door it came through. Skip the first and you are guessing. Skip the third and you are back in a month. A candle bought online does none of the three on its own.
I am Don Jacinto Nahual, curandero from Catemaco, Veracruz, and this is what protection means at my table after thirty years.
What you can do at home, tonight
These are the things families in Mexico have always done, and none of them costs more than a few dollars.
- A glass of water behind the front door, changed every few days. The old ones did it and it still works as a habit of attention.
- A white candle, lit with a specific request, not a vague one. Say the name of what you want kept out.
- Rue or rosemary in a pot by the entrance. Both are cleansing herbs in this tradition and both grow in Southern California without effort.
- A red string on the wrist of a child. This is the Mexican protective object; the blue glass eye is Turkish and came later.
- Salt across the threshold after a difficult visitor has left.
Do these and you have done what a grandmother would have done. What they cannot do is find or clear something that was placed on you on purpose. That takes a reading.
What a protection spell is when it is done properly
First, a reading, with the egg in water or the cards, to see what is actually there. Sometimes the answer is nothing, and I say so. Then a cleansing to release it. Then the closing: prayer to San Miguel Arcángel or San Cipriano, a candle kept for a set number of days, and instructions on how to keep the house after. The whole first session is about an hour and costs $97, closed price.
What is sold as protection and is not
- An amulet on its own. I sell none. As a reminder and as a piece of culture it does something for the person wearing it; as an object, nothing.
- A "strong" spell that costs more than a closed price you were told up front. The tab that climbs "because the energy is heavy" is the business model of half this trade.
- A protection that requires you to hand over cash or jewelry to be blessed. That is theft, prosecuted as such in California.
The limit nobody advertises
Not everything that goes wrong has a person behind it. A bad year is a bad year, and a curandero who finds a curse in every client is running a store. Part of the first session is telling those apart, and when it is a bad year I say so, even when that means you do not come back.
Where to start
With the reading, not the candle. The service page is here: spiritual protection. If you suspect someone specific, read the signs someone did work on you first. Los Angeles, 1208 Venice Blvd, walk-in; Santa Ana, 830 S Main St Ste 109, by appointment. (213) 598-1928, first call free.
