Spiritual cleansing: what it is, what happens and when it helps

Candles burning during a traditional spiritual cleansing

A spiritual cleansing, a limpia in Spanish, is a session where a curandero uses herbs, prayer, an egg, candles and copal smoke to clear what a person is carrying. It lasts about an hour. It is not a massage and it is not therapy, and it does not replace either.

People come to it for one of two reasons. Either something is going wrong that has no explanation, or they can feel a weight they cannot name and want to know what it is before it gets worse.

What actually happens in the session

You sit or stand. I pass bunches of fresh herbs over your body, usually rue, rosemary and basil, while praying. Then an egg, whole and raw, passed slowly from head to feet. Copal smoke. Sometimes a candle, depending on what comes up.

Then the egg gets broken into a glass of water and we both look at it. What the white does in the water is how this tradition reads what a person is carrying. That reading takes a few minutes and it is the part most people remember.

Nothing hurts. Nothing gets cut, burned or drunk. If someone tells you a cleansing requires any of that, leave.

When a cleansing is the right answer

  • Heaviness that does not lift with rest, over weeks rather than days.
  • A stretch where work, money, health and family go wrong at the same time.
  • The sense of being watched or followed by something you cannot see.
  • Repeating dreams, especially with the same person in them.
  • Constant fighting at home that starts over nothing.
  • Sudden fear or startling in a child, what we call susto.

When it is the wrong answer

Here is where I lose customers, and I would rather lose them.

Chest pain is a cardiologist. Sustained loss of weight or appetite is a doctor. Thoughts of hurting yourself are an emergency and the number is 988. Depression that has lasted months is a therapist, and there are Spanish-speaking ones across Los Angeles County.

A cleansing sits alongside those things. It does not stand in for them, and anyone who tells you to stop your treatment is either untrained or dishonest.

What it costs and how many you need

A first cleansing with me is $97 and runs about an hour. That is a closed price and it does not move.

Almost nobody finishes in one. Three sessions is the normal course, and in heavy cases it can run to nine. I say that at the start rather than after you have paid, because the trick of quoting low and then climbing session by session is how a lot of people in this trade make their money, and it is the main reason people distrust all of us.

Common questions

Can it be done remotely?
Part of the work, yes. The first one I prefer in person, because there are things you do not catch over a phone.

Do I need to believe in it for it to work?
Most people who sit down in front of me are not sure what they believe. That has never been a problem.

Is it against the Catholic faith?
The Church condemns it. In practice the Catemaco tradition prays to Catholic saints and uses holy water, and millions of people in Mexico live both without conflict. That is not mine to resolve for anyone.

How soon do people feel something?
Most say they sleep better the same night. I am telling you what people report, not making a promise: this work does not come with guarantees and anyone who gives you one is selling.

Where I see people

Los Angeles, 1208 Venice Blvd. Santa Ana, 830 S Main St Ste 109, by appointment only. I come from the curandero tradition of Catemaco, Veracruz, four generations of it, and I have been doing this for over thirty years.

The number is (213) 598-1928 and the first call is free. If what you have is not for me, I will tell you on that call and point you somewhere else. Start by reading what a botanica is if the whole thing is new to you.
